In May of 2010 Cooper Home Health joined forces with Cell Phones for Soldiers to share in their efforts to provide phone minutes to soldiers. For each used cell phone that is turned in and recycled, Cell Phones for Soldiers is able to purchase one hour of talk time for men and women serving in all branches of our military.

Baskets have been set up in several locations and thanks to the participation of many area residents, Cooper Home Health has sent off 334 phones to date. That translates into 20,040 minutes that US troops can use to call home.

“We are grateful to so many of you who have taken the time to stop and drop off your used cell phones. If any of you received new phones for Christmas, this would be a great time to recycle your old ones. Not only does that help a service man or woman, but it also keeps those phones out of our landfills. We have another shipment almost ready to send out, so please help us fill that box,” said Melissa Millard, Community Education Coordinator for Cooper Home Health.

In addition to the Cooper Home Health main office at 51 North Side Square, anyone may drop off phones at the following locations: Cooper Community Clinic, Dairy Queen, Enloe State Bank, First National Bank, and the US Post Office.

Cooper Home Health is continuing to collect old cell phones to be recycled. Each phone donated buys an hour of time on a phone card for U.S. soldiers serving across the world.

There is a drop box in the foyer of the Cooper Home Health office at 51 North Side Square where anyone can drop off old phones and accessories Monday through Friday from 8:00 to 5:00. A donation receipt is also available since Cell Phones For Soldiers is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and donations are tax-deductible.

Other convenient local locations where phones may be dropped off are Cooper Community Health Center, Dairy Queen, Enloe State Bank, First National Bank, and the Post Office.

“We recently sent our first shipment of phones to be recycled and were pleased to have collected 103 phones. These are phones that have been kept out of landfills and at the same time are providing a great service to our armed forces,” said Nicki Beeler, administrator of Cooper Home Health.

Another box will be shipped in the coming weeks so anyone who has upgraded their phone and has an old one they would like to donate is encouraged to find a location and be a part of this worthy endeavor.
NORWELL, Mass., March 15, 2010– More than 150,000 troops are serving overseas and are away from their families. Cell Phones for Soldiers, and Cooper Home Health are calling on all Americans to support these brave men and women by donating your unused cell phones. Cell Phones for Soldiers hopes to collect over 50,000 cell phones this year to help keep troops connected with their families.

“Over the past few years, we have been amazed by the generosity of others. But, we have also seen the need to support our troops continue.” says Brittany Bergquist, Cell Phones for Soldiers co-founder. “It is easy for Americans to make a small sacrifice of support by donating their unused cell phones, and providing families with a much-needed connection to their loved ones overseas.”

Local residents can support the collection drive by donating their phones at the Cooper Home Health main office location at:

- 51 North Side Square, 903-395-2811

“We’re proud to show our support for U.S. soldiers, and to contribute to a worthy cause like Cell Phones for Soldiers,” says Nicki Beeler, Administrator. “For those interested, we will provide a donation receipt.”

Cell Phones for Soldiers was founded by teenagers Robbie and Brittany Bergquist from Norwell, Mass., with $21 of their own money. Since then, the registered 501c3 non-profit organization has raised almost $2 million in donations and distributed more than 500,000 prepaid calling cards to soldiers serving overseas.

“We are continuously overwhelmed by the enthusiastic support of thousands of Americans who have helped our troops speak with their loved ones,” says the teens’ father, Bob Bergquist. “However, the need for support keeps growing as more soldiers are sent to the Middle East or are asked to serve extended tours of duty.”

Through increased fundraising efforts, the Bergquist family hopes to raise more than $9 million in the next five years to fund new programs, such as providing video phones and prepaid service to allow soldiers abroad to see their families on a regular basis.

The donated phones are sent to ReCellular, which pays Cell Phones for Soldiers for each phone – enough to provide an hour of talk time to soldiers abroad.

Approximately half of the phones ReCellular processes are reconditioned and resold to wholesale companies in over 40 countries around the world. Phones and components that cannot be refurbished are dismantled and recycled to reclaim materials, including:
• Gold, silver and platinum from circuit boards
• Copper wiring from phone chargers
• Nickel, iron, cadmium and lead from battery packs
• Plastic from phone cases and accessories

About Cell Phones for Soldiers:
Cell Phones for Soldiers was created by Brittany & Robbie Bergquist of Norwell MA. After reading a story about a soldier who ran up a huge phone bill calling home from Iraq, these two teenagers decided to help out. They started by opening an account with $21.00 of their own money. They are collecting cash donations and old cell phones. The cell phones are recycled for cash and the proceeds are used to buy prepaid calling cards for our soldiers serving in the Middle East. Cell Phones For Soldiers is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their efforts have motivated people and businesses around the country to donate to this worthy cause. Their goal is to provide every US soldier with a way to call home for free.
